As Jade wrote, the order in which the Chronicles was written is as follows:
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
Prince Caspian
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
The Silver Chair
The Horse and His Boy
The Magicians Nephew
The Last Battle
The way Lewis wrote the Chronicles, beginning with The Lion and working his way to The Last Battle, unravels the mysteries and history gradually, and it is much more fun to read it this way than to just read it in flat chronilogical order. I think Lewis would be turning in his grave if he knew that the publishers had rearranged his books. In The Lion, there are allusions and hints at characters such as Digory (who is the professor)...and how exciting it is to discover, books later, that the professor IS Digory, and that he too had been in Narnia, and that the wardrobe is magical because...well, you get my drift. I think something of the fun and games of Narnia is lost when you just start out with The Magician's Nephew. If you don't start out with The Lion, then you miss the whole foundation upon which Narnia is built, ie, Aslan's sacrifice.
