Hi,
I am on H1-B visa and so is my husband. We filed our taxes jointly last year. Our daughter was born in Sept 2001.
On account of some difficulties in our marriage I would like to file my taxes separately this year but have the following concerns.
1. I am on unpaid vacation right now and will be in India when I get my W-2 from my employer. Is it possible for me to make an arrangement with H&R block for example to take care of my taxes in my absence and have the W-2 sent to them directly ?
2. Are we bound to file our taxes together because we are not yet separated or divorced ?
3. If I file separately can I claim standard deduction for our daughter and does that preclude my husband from doing the same ?
4. Can I obtain an extension for my tax based on my legal status ? I plan to remain in India till May- Jun 2002.
I would be obliged if you could advice me on these issues
