I'm an Italian student. I've recently read (and loved) "Doctor Zhivago". First of all I think it is not the anti-Ussr pamphlet many have spoken about: the attitude of Jurij towards the revolution is not at all one-way, it is contadictory and ambiguous. In the beginning he is definetely a supporter of the bolsheviks, though not a communist himself : it's just with the civil war that his mind changes; and even this time, not in an absolute way, since Zhivago is divided between hate and support. He is a typical example of a Russian intellectual who seems not to be able to take a resolute decision about anything. For instance, he might have tried to reach his family after they have been exilee, but his efforts were almost without conviction. Lara is the only person for whom he wins his own pivity. I think other two important characters are Pasha Antipov and Evgraf Zhivago: the first is an idealist who is ready to anything in order to give consistency to his ideal, but can't stand his own failure (and in the end commits suicide), while the second is full precisely of that resolution and matter-of-fact sense which Zhivago lacks of . Lara, instead, is almost a steretype of Russian literature: the beautiful woman full of abnegation and generosity, always ready to sacrifice herself for someone else's sake.
