: I just read the book and saw the movie 'Mansfield Park', but there is still one thing that I don't understand. If Edmund's mother and Fanny's mother are sisters, wouldn't that make Fanny and Edmund cousins? I'm just starting to learn about British Lit. in my 12th grade honors English class. So please be patient. : Aimee
Yep, they are cousins all right....but that is legally fine. But what is kinda odd is the fact that they are raised as siblings. Check out what Mrs Norris says about them being raise as brother and sister and it being immoral to be anything else....Then Edmund refers to Fanny as his sister weeks before marrying her. hmmmm...odd Austen doesn't seem to really tie in with incest..but this seems a bit weird
