I am not sure whether this is what you mean - but he was put into prison because he had been accused of being against the aristocracy. The general belief seems to be the fact that he seemed to have stayed in prison mainly because he had basically been forgotten about - Mosieur Defarge and his cronies "discovered" him and took him in for safety sake - I will have to check all this - but there was that bit in Book One referring to the fact that they had to be careful about what was said and done around him or they stood the chance of being locked up.
