I really enjoy Shirley Jackson's The Lottery. I read it for the first time in High School. It is rather unforgettable. The story is rich in symbolism, which is probably why it got such an outraged response when it appeared in the New Yorker for the first time in the 40's. The story points out the ridiculous, sometimes cruel things that a society will do in the name of tradition.
