Despite the refusal of the four tragedies of Shakespeare viz.,'Hamlet''Lear,' 'Othello,' and 'Macbeth,' to be fetterd to a pattern as such, the endings of these plays, nevertheless,in my opinion, reveal a kind of paradigm.Especially, when we come to think of the tragic vision of the plays there seems to be a paradigmatic unity about the way in which a general truth about life is being unfolded inasmuch as the conflict informing the inner sovereign self and the external compulsions comes to rest in the denouement of the play.Although, there are other areas too where the paradigm is evident vis-a-vis the ending of these plays I would be most happy to receive comments from scholars on the topic "Shakespeare's tragic vision and the endings of the great tragedies".[This message has been edited by Gautam Sarma (edited 03-25-2002).] |
