The colleges listed below are great places to study the Western Heritage, but by no means are they the only places. In the end the education one receives depends on the rugged and relentless ambition to learn that one harbors in one's soul. At any college, or in any walk of life (except for ivy-league English departments), one has access to the greatest teachers of all time-- the thinkers and artists who preserved their souls in the works of the Western Canon. All that one has to do is open a book, or these days, turn on a computer and sign aboard The Jolly Roger, the flagship of the fastest-sailing literary movement on the seven cyber-seas.
Also to be found in The National Review College Guide, in addition to the colleges listed below, are well-versed essays explaining the fundamental philosophy that underlies the use of the classics in a true liberal education. Or shall we say a "conservative" liberal education. The editors have done their homework, and the highlights of each institution's program are offered. Do-it-yourself scholars will want to check out the "Great Books" program of St. John's College which receives a few pages ' devotion in the guide, along with deserved praise. And for those who have the opportunity to study at a University, it would be wise to keep in mind the words of Mark Twain-- "don't let school get in the way of your education."
